Horse Hay Tips

• Feed by weight, not flakes. Flakes vary dramatically between bales and cuttings. Use a scale.
• A 1,000 lb horse drinks 10–12 gallons of water per day — more in summer heat or heavy work.
• Introduce new hay gradually over 7–10 days to avoid colic, especially switching between grass and alfalfa.
• Alfalfa is higher protein and energy — great for working horses, growing youngsters, and lactating mares. Use less by weight (15% less) vs grass hay.
• Slow feeders / hay nets with small holes extend eating time, reduce waste, and mimic natural grazing patterns.
