• Call 811 before digging — it's a free service in the US that marks underground utilities within 2–3 business days. Required by law in most states.
• Post depth rule: Bury 1/3 of the post total length. An 8-ft post should go 2.5–3 ft deep. Posts in freeze zones need to go below the frost line.
• Concrete in freeze zones: Use fast-setting concrete and flare the bottom slightly to resist frost heave.
• T-posts are cheaper and faster for field fence / electric wire but require special tools (T-post driver) and aren't suitable for gates.
• Add 10–15% overage to all material estimates for waste, mistakes, and future repairs.
